AACRC Spring Break Tour

The Annual AACRC Spring Break Tour was started by Dr. P. Eric Abercrumbie before the establishment of the African American Cultural Resource Center to provide students the opportunity to network with other students at historically African American universities and with alumni. This trip is meant to bring new ideas and conversation to the University of Cincinnati to improve the diversity, inclusion, and leadership of our student body.

Reflection

My experience with the AACRC Spring Break Tour can only be described as metamorphic. This was my opportunity to connect with other schools and to bridge the gap between a part of my culture and my academic pursuits. I made friendships and professional connections that will last me a lifetime and these connections helped me become more confident in my skills. I wish that I had made them sooner in the year.

By far, my 2 favorite activities that we did on this tour was visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture and attending the several Alumni receptions. The NMAAHC was an eye-opening experience that was meant for us to dig deeper into our roots and explore the tragedies and accomplishments that African Americans have achieved since our arrival in America. Also, the alumni receptions allowed me to open up to professionals and learn about their experience not just in the workforce but, also of their time with UC and socially after college.

Now that I have experienced the AACRC Spring Break Tour and all of the benefits it brought to my life, I am now more confident in my speaking skills, improved my ability to keep a meaningful conversation, and made me more assured in my capacity of creating and maintaining the important relationships in my life. This trip gave me ideas for how I will continue to pursue and advocate for what I think is right and for the changes I want to see on UC's campus.

Piece of Work

To exemplify my learning

Day by Day Journal

To document and reminisce my time on the Spring Break Tour, I kept up with a daily journal to write about what we did, what was discussed, my important takeaways, and also our word of the day which came from Kwanzaa. These daily journals usually took myself about 15-20 minutes to write and it was a good reflection period as I was able to address any questions that I wanted to ask the next day. This helped me fondly remember my experience with the AACRC, in addition to my weekly journal from the transitions program.
