Sophomore Year
2023-2024
Global Citizen Scholar
My definition of a global citizen scholar encompasses a blend of academic excellence, ethical responsibility, and a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives. Throughout this year in the UHP, I have transformed my view of the program from a purely academic standpoint to a view that allows for active participation, appreciation of culture, and a commitment to learning and exploration.
This year had provided many opportunities to become the global citizen scholar I wish to be, including the following:
-
Cultural Immersion: My involvement in the Turner Ambassador Program and Engagement Committee has allowed me to interact with international students and understand their unique experiences and challenges. This experience enhanced my cultural sensitivity and provided a platform to foster inclusivity and mutual respect. Organizing cultural exchange events and workshops enabled me to appreciate diverse perspectives and develop a deeper empathy for people from different backgrounds.
-
Research: I volunteered my time with the Guerra Lab this year, to assist in the measuring of the butterflies being used in a graduate’s research project. This allowed me to engage in hands-on scientific research and understand the broader ecological implications of the study. The meticulous process of data collection and analysis taught me the importance of attention to detail and the value of contributing to scientific knowledge that has significance.
-
Community Engagement: My volunteer efforts through my research and my commitment to the Bearcat Pantry as an ambassador has allowed me to explore my passion of helping underserved communities. Working at the Bearcat Pantry, I helped provide essential resources to students facing food insecurity, promoting social equity within our campus. This experience underscored the importance of local action in addressing broader societal issues and reinforced my dedication to community service.
In conclusion, my journey in the UHP has transformed my understanding of a global citizen scholar from a purely academic focus to a more integrated approach that combines knowledge, cultural sensitivity, ethical responsibility, and active engagement. This evolution continues to shape my academic pursuits and career aspirations, driving me to contribute positively to the community.
